Cooking
(Tuesday A.M.)

Please ensure that you book at least 24 hours in advance!

*To ensure that we have enough materials and resources ready for each session

Cooking - Tuesday's 9.30am till 12pm

The aim of our cooking sessions is to promote nutritious, from scratch cooking, teaching the children how to take a handful of fresh, healthy ingredients and confidently turn them into a tasty meal. Over the weeks, we will create a range of sweet and savoury foods, exploring a number of traditional cuisines from home and around the world that the children can then take home with them at the end of the session.

Attendees will have the opportunity to learn the following skills:

  • Food safety and hygiene

  • Food harvesting

  • Basic nutrition

  • Reading and following recipes

  • How to adjust a recipe for different portion sizes

  • How to accurately weigh out ingredients

  • Health and safety within the kitchen

  • Knife skills including chopping, dicing, slicing, julienne and mincing

  • Preserving Food (freezing, dehydrating, canning)

  • Tidying away and washing up

At the beginning of each session, we will harvest any foods needed for our recipe from our onsite vegetable garden. The children will then work either in small groups or as a whole group to make a tasty, nutritious recipe each week which they will all get to sample and take home with them if they wish. Working in this manner will promote communication and teamwork as well as fostering a passion for food and cooking within the kitchen that will last a lifetime.

What you need to know...

We understand that all children have varied needs, regardless of their age or background. Some may thrive off the independence they gain from coming to Roots, however some may need a little extra reassurance and support from a familiar face. For this reason, we allow you to make the decision whether you would like to drop your children off for their session, or whether you would like to stay on site with them. As we are a working farm, there are rules of which you will need to agree and adhere to if you chose to stay on site. These can be read in full detail within our waiver, of which will you receive upon booking.

This session runs from 9.30 am until 12 pm with a short break midway through.

Please ensure that your child is dressed suitably for the session. We recommend old clothes that you don't mind getting a little mucky! Please also bring a water bottle and a plastic tub with a tight fitting lid so that your child can take some food home with them.

There is also the option of staying for lunch if you would like to spend the whole day with us. Please select this option upon booking and bring a packed lunch with you.

A waiver MUST be completed and signed before the child can attend their first session. This will be emailed to you shortly after booking, please contact us as soon as possible if you do not receive it.
